Some personal trainers may not be good enough for you and instead of making you more fit, they could only bring some problems. When working with personal trainers, we should be aware of not sharing too much of our personal information. It could be too easy for some trainers to pass the information to other clients, especially if we never said that the information is actually confidential. We shouldn’t choose clubs that don’t enforce a proper code of ethics. There are rules that personal trainers must abide. Unfortunately, the authority doesn’t require personal trainers to follow a special regulation, just like psychiatrist and other medical service professional.
Despite the lack of real regulation for personal trainers, there are still a number of certifying organizations that we can trust. We shouldn’t choose personal trainers who haven’t passed any kind of standardized testing. Personal trainers should charge more depending on their level of experience. Any money that we pay should be seen as our investment in our health. We shouldn’t choose an expensive trainer who is not able to provide a real return to our investment. It is also not a good idea, if the trainer can’t provide us with a real behavioural change. We should find a trainer who can personally motivate us, if not, we only throw our money away.
In order to identify a qualified personal trainer, we should ask we are able to get a trial workout session. The trainer should also be able to provide preliminary consultation. The trainer may not be good enough if he can’t maintain an in-depth conversation that is related to our goals and personality. The ability of prospective trainer should also be evaluated, so we will be able to get real results. Another good way to avoid bad personal trainer is to ask family and friends for recommendations. We will be able to know a personal trainer that we can trust based on this recommendation. There’s little barrier in the personal trainer industry and just about anyone can designate himself as a personal trainer.
Some personal trainers also play the role as a nutritionist and this isn’t a good thing, if they don’t have educational background in this field. It means that an advice on nutritional matter can do more harm than good. Strenuous exercise, medication and nutritional supplements may not result in a good thing, if they are not backed by professional guidance. Before agreeing to any nutritional advice, it is important to make sure that the trainer’s recommendation is valid. We shouldn’t choose a trainer who can’t give us true professional help and genuine motivation. We should be instructed on how to plan workout routines. If we get stuck, we don’t want to have trainer who doesn’t have a clue on what to advise.
The personal trainer may also not be appropriate for us, if he doesn’t steer us away from machines. There are fitness exercises that we can do with tools and objects at home, so we should make sure that we are well trained to use them.
