5 Home Improvement Projects That Will Sneak Up On You

3 mins read

When you’re a homeowner you always have a list of things you want to get to around the house.  Some you consider important, some are just things that you want to get to someday, but they’re all on your list.  The problem is that some of the items tend to grow and grow, and in the end sneak up on you.

You Don’t Need Every Gadget

Organizing you kitchen is never going to be any easier than it is right now.  That’s because next week you’re going to by yet another countertop kitchen appliance that needs a spot to exist.  There’s nothing wrong with getting the latest type of blender but you don’t have to keep the last three, either.  Make it a rule to get rid of one, or maybe three depending on the functions, older small appliances when you buy a new one and you’ll never have to do the weekend-long de-cluttering you’re dreading.

Keep the Cleanse Going

If you can get the kitchen in order, you’ll probably be inspired to hit the rest of the house.  Closets, attic spaces, and basement storage areas can all function at a higher level when the never-used (AKA useless) items are removed.  Don’t get stuck in the rut of swapping out seasonal items and thinking you’re getting somewhere.  If a box or bin didn’t come out this year, those things can probably go.

Always Be Safe and Secure

Sometimes things don’t get done because they don’t seem like a project and keep getting pushed down the list.  If you’ve recently asked yourself or anyone else, “How long do carbon monoxide detectors last?” it’s probably time to check on yours.   If you want to make it into a project, add you smoke detectors and anything else in the safety and security realm that require batteries or alignment.  Motion detectors that don’t detect motion aren’t really helping you.

Get You Mind and Those Leaves out of the Gutter

Quick note: if water starts leaking into your house from the edge of your roof, you’ve waited too long to clean your gutters.  Taking care of this out-of-sight, out-of-mind item will save you a lot of heartburn and in some cases a lot of money down the road.

There are a lot of things that can sneak up on you when you’re a homeowner and taking care of the ones that keep you safe and avert small disasters are good ones to put on the top of your list.
