Not many know the history of hair transplants. It has taken years to perfect since its beginning in 1952, however, it is now one of the most popular cosmetic procedures.

Like all cosmetic procedure, before you go ahead it is important that you do your research. A consultation is often the first step and by talking it through with a trained professional, you can ask as many questions as you like about how the process works.  If you are divided about booking an appointment with a doctor, here are some of the answers you may looking for…

 Hair Transplant Glasgow: Starting Here

Celebrity Doctor Asim Shahmalak from the Crown Clinic in Manchester has completed treatments on celebrities such as Calum Best. He believes that one-day the hair transplant process will be  as popular as botox training. The doctor highly recommends the process and says ‘hair transplantation is the only method that is guaranteed to overcome hair loss and regain hair. Medications can halt hair loss but they will not lead to the regrowth of lost hair”.

This process has changed lives. Calum Best has said that these procedures “have completely changed my life. They have given me so much more confidence and enabled me to wear my hair just the way I like”. During the transplant, hair that the patient already has is used to fill balding areas which are usually found on the head. For years surgeons have been using this technique as it first started in 1950.

The treatment begins when the patient’s scalp is injected with an anesthetic. This numbs head, making the process much more manageable. There are two ways the patient can be treated and this can be decided on with a doctor, who will choose between follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).

Hair Transplant Consultation

Hair Transplant Glasgow consultant, Darren McKeown, advises anyone who is considering a procedure like a hair transplant to visit a clinic beforehand for a consultation. There may not be as many side effects for hair transplantation as there are for other procedures, however it is always best to check with a doctor before going ahead with the treatment.

Follicular Unit Strip Surgery

This type of surgery removed around a 6-10-inch strip of skin which is usually sourced from the back of the patient’s head. Once the skin has been removed, the patch will be sewn back together. This procedure is incredibly discreet and hair will usually cover any sign of it.

The doctor will then separate that strip into 500-2,000 tiny grafts. This process is incredible as each graft has just an individual hair on it.

Follicular Unit Extraction

The second treatment uses the patient’s hair follicles, which are removed from the scalp one at a time. From there the surgeon will prepare grafts, which will allow the hair to be attached to a clean, numb area. This procedure takes time and process could take up to 4 to 8 hours.

The procedure may have different levels of success for each patient. Hair type, quality, and colour are all factors which could affect the success of the treatment.
